The New Generation of Parents Love of Baby Products
by Delane Gillitts

Reckless spending on baby products when you're a first time
parent or a first time grandparent is so very easy.
Considering that babies are by their nature very adorable,
baby products too seem irresistible. Are parents spending
way too much discretionary income than necessary due to
societal pressures or all these products really necessary to
make your baby content and smart?

The more income in a household means the more money parents
hand over for baby products. This trend is working its way
down to households with lesser incomes as these families try
to give their child the same benefits. Some studies show
that first-time parents spend on average about $6200 in the
first 12 months. Another study according to Champaign For
Our Children, Inc. breaks down expenses to about $785 a
month, totaling at least $8200 during the first 2 years.
Most of these costs go toward nice clothes, furniture and
toys. With each successive child, parents tend to spend
slightly - and only slightly - less.

Is remodeling the baby room with the latest wallpaper and
baby furniture really going to make the baby that much
happier? Odds are it won't (although it might if a stressed
out parent benefits from these comforts). Although studies
show that certain colors and patterns appeal more to
infants, the attraction to these colors and patterns is not
dependent on a designer name. Additionally, even though
infants benefit greatly from stimulation, an expensive and
fancy mobile doesn't exactly replace the benefits of an
adult face smiling and chatting with the baby.

Past generations did not spend as much on baby products as
the current generation spends. The juvenile product
industry loves this. According to Juvenile Products
Manufacturers Association (JPMA), the juvenile products
market grossed over $6.02 billion worldwide in 2004. Many
parents are falling for some extremely ridiculous products
just because these items are well marketed. For instance,
why buy a $400 cashmere blanket for Junior? A parent
shouldn't go out and purchase items just because they're on
the market or popular. Even if experts are promoting the
item, you should use discretion about the product's age
appropriateness and cost. Bargain shopping helps many
parents afford a few helpful products at prices that make
sense. Also, do some comparison shopping, coupon clippings
and look for second-hand deals at garage sales to get deals
that work with your budget and your burning desire to give
your baby lots of cool stuff.

Over stimulation is sending off wrong signals to many of
today's parents who are desensitized to its effects. Many
parents are forgetting that children also appreciate
simplicity. While some stimulation is beneficial,
overloading your child with too many goodies leaves the
child wondering which way to go. Also, buying a Gucci white
mink jacket might be amusing, it will probably only break
your bank account. Perhaps, considering more beneficial
ways to spend money on your baby, like starting a college
fund, might help Junior much more down the road.
