What Happens When Child Actors Become Adults?

We all have beloved television shows from our childhood,
and we wonder, from time to time, just whatever happened
to their young stars. Some of them do indeed parlay their
younger stardom into adult careers, but a great many child
actors succumb to the cliche of fading fame and difficult
later years. In fact, most do not maintain the former
level of fame. Just consider the fates of these former
child stars once their TV shows were cancelled.
The 1950s sitcom ~Make Room for Daddy~ featured an endearing
young girl who played the daughter of actor Danny Thomas.
But rather than turn her early fame into a long-term career,
the actress Angela Cartwright became the owner and manager
of an internet boutique called ~Rubber Boots.~ She has also
continued to dabble in photography, a hobby she has
practiced for more than thirty years. Her success has
enabled her to become the curator of ~A Studio Gallery,~
which is also home to her studio. Cartwright is wife
and mother of three whose talents have allowed her
to find success off-screen.
Fans of the longrunning 60s and 70s show "The Partridge
Family" may recall a young actor by the name of Brian
Forster who played the second Chris Partridge. After
the show went off the air, Forster traded television
for the classroom, becoming a science teacher. Later,
he shifted gears again and became a race car driver.
Along the way he participated in some Repertory Theater
shows, but for the most part his acting days were over.
If you remember "Phyllis," a spin-off of "The Mary
Tyler Moore Show," you probably remember young Bess
Lindstrom, Phyllis'daughter. The actress who played
Bess, Lisa Gerritsen, is now working in product
development in California. Soon after the end of
the television series that brought her fame, she
joined up with a software company and has been
there since.
If you remember the TV serial "Dark Shadows," you probably
recall Denise Nickerson, who played Amy. She also went on to
play Violet Beauregard in ~Willy Wonka and the Chocolate
Factory~ before leaving the profession to become a nurse.
She then made a detour into accounting before taking on
her current occupation: selling autographed pictures of
herself on the internet and at "Dark Shadows" conventions.
She now is the mother of one boy. You can find out more
at her website:http://hometown.aol.com/denisenickerson.
To learn about what happened to your favorite child
stars, try typing in their names, or the names of
their TV shows, into an internet search engine. You
may just find that the path they took led them out
of Hollywood, but not away from personal success.
