Finding The Right People For the Job
by Paul Umaste

To be the manager of a company can be one of the most
demanding jobs on Earth, especially when it comes to hire
new personnel to fill vacant positions in your
corporation. This job is always a stressful one, it does
not matter if you work in a small business or for a large
corporation, and you have to take several things into
account when interviewing people or while evaluating
resumes. However, this process can be successful if you
consider some of the following key factors.

The first step toward finding good people to fill
positions is the advertising process. You can put in
ads in local newspapers and make postings on Internet
job sites. Be sure to word your ad in such a way that
it adequately describes the most important skills needed
for the job. If the available position calls for
certain communication or technical skills be sure to
list those clearly, and if applicants are expected to
know particular software programs make sure you say that
this knowledge is required.

Once you have placed you ad, you will have to begin
screening applicants. The first step is to look through
all of the submitted resumes and rule out those who
obviously do not have the right qualifications for the
job. This process can be as lenient or as strict as you
need, depending on how many people apply for the
position. If you have a big stack of resumes, you will
have to immediately rule out some people just for the
sake of time. However, if you have little to choose
from, you might consider interviewing all of the
candidates to see who seems the best suited to the job
at hand.

You can start arranging interviews once the candidates
field has been narrowed. We all know how exhausting this
activity can be, but you will need to save some time to
conduct your interviews. It does not matter how busy you
are with your own job, you will need to make a schedule
for the interviews. Perhaps you will have to split your
usual day in two, leaving half of it for the interviewing
activity and the rest of the day to face your typical
responsibilities. So, try to make a good schedule before
initiating the interviews.

The process of interviewing could be tense for both the
interviewees and the interviewers. So it would be wise for
the interviewers to create a relaxed atmosphere in order
to make the applicants at ease. This will allow the
candidates to behave in a calm way and to show themselves
as they are. A strict attitude on the part of the
interviewers will make the interviewees feel stressed.

Remember that you can frequently obtain precious
information about people through an interview. Both
positive and negative qualities of a candidate should be
pointed out in order to help you memorize them after a
long interviewing process. You need to be perfectly clear
when you explain the skills you require from a candidate.
You have to pay attention to the applicants attitude
during the interview as well. For example, if he or she
remains confident even when facing the toughest questions,
it may signify that the applicant is able to manage
difficult situations at work.

The time for the big decision comes then. You have to
choose from among all applicants you are taking into
consideration. In order to make things easier, you can
narrow your choices making a shortlist of two or three
candidates who you think fill the requirements for the
position, and then arrange a new interview with them. The
most important thing is that you must be confident that
you have chosen the right person once you have made your
decision.
