Schedule Europe Trip for Best Seasons, Values
by Glynnis Farrow

A holiday in Europe is the experience of a lifetime, with a
multitude of attractions to sample throughout the
continent. For those who like bargains and fine weather,
though, there are some hard choices to make on the best
travel times.

The time prior to and following the high summer season are
ideal for travel, both for fine weather and cheaper prices.
In the winter, mild weather in the southern countries means
an enjoyable holiday experience.

For sun lovers, winter is the worst time to visit northern
Europe. The weather in December, January and February is
cold, wet, and gray. There are too few hours of daylight.
Many of the shops close in some countries and the weather
isn't nice enough for outdoor tours. You will be limited
to indoor activities for most of your trip.

However, winter travel offers the best prices. Italy or
Greece would be good choices if you are limited to a winter
vacation.

Other benefits are attached to winter travel. Exciting
winter festivals are commonplace, and big cities like Paris
have wonderful Christmas deocrations.

Another benefit is there aren't many tourists in these
months. You will get to see more of authentic European
life than you would in the summer season.

In the early spring, most of Europe is still wet and
chilly, especially in the northern countries. The streets
are uncrowded and the weather gradually becomes more
tolerable. Although it is still too cold for swimming and
other water based activities, the weather is warm enough
for outdoor tours and sight seeing. The prices are
reasonable for airfare and hotels, making this a good time
for budget conscious travelers. Once summer hits, most
countries and major tourist areas become crowded.

May and June are among the best months to visit most
European countries. The weather is warm on most of the
continent and it's still uncrowded. There are a variety of
festivals and cultural events throughout Europe in May and
June. Because the tourist season hasn't started into full
swing yet, you can get good deals on accommodations and
plane fare. An added benefit is few lines at most tourist
attractions and plenty of room on tours and in restaurants.

When summer arrives and schools let out, Europe becomes
super busy. Lodging fills up and almost everything becomes
more expensive with the increased demand. Long lines are
typical at the popular tourist sites.

Northern Europe, with its good weather and smaller crowds,
would be a good option for summer travel. Whatever season
you choose, there are more than enough attractions to
provide a great European holiday.
